Absorbents such as zeolite have been used for improving air quality in Hog production by binding
ammonium and thus reducing ammonia volatilization. While Portejoie and others {2003} reduced
ammonia emissions in the lab by placing zeolite on a perforated polystyrene float placed over the slurry
pit may not be practical on a working hog farm but, adding bulk zeolite in a lagoon environment would
be difficult i feel a good mesh bag of zeolite rocks{more than one if needed}suspended in the mix and
taken out periodically,rinsed off left out to dry and recharge then returned to continue the work may
be an acceptable process. Zeolite can reduce ammonia emissions inside hog houses if applied to the
pits,but distributing the zeolite throughout the pits under the slats may be difficult but i suggest useing
a hand held grass seed spreader to ease the task. Increase animal health, welfare, and production by
feeding between ½l to 2% of zeolite (by weight) to The reasons for these improvements are complex.
However, the zeolite becomes an ammonium reservoir that allows the animal to more efficiently utilize
ingested nitrogen. Other explanations may include the micro-toxin binding ability of the zeolite or the
fact that zeolite takes up heavy metals.
Feeding is generally started with an inclusion rate of ½% and can be worked up to 2% by weight of
the total ration. For pelleted feeds, minus 100 mesh Zeolite is used. For mash feeds, generally 40 x
100 or 14 x 40 is used. Benefits are found in feeding dairy cows, beef cattle, hogs, poultry, sheep,
rabbits and other animals.
